Dsicover Poiana Brasov – the best view in the middle of mighty mountains

poiana brasov

An official district of Brasov but 12 km south of it, Poiana Brasov (altitude 1030 m) is located on the slope of the impressive Postavaru massif. The most popular ski resort, it is a common resort for foreigners who buy cheap tourist packages, but also for Romanians.

Although it has better prices than Klosters and Aspen and is a good place for beginners and children, more advanced skiers would find the slopes too easy. Many would consider the entertainment on offer to be poor compared to the resorts in the Alps. However the quiet and sheltered location is a huge advantage for this resort, where skiing is possible for a longer time than in other parts of Romania.

Poiana has been a destination for hiking and winter sports since ancient times. The first documentary mention of this place dates back to 1427, in the context of the shearing activities that took place here. Skiers climbed Postăvaru as early as 1895, and in 1906 the first ski competition was held in Poiana. Until around 1950, the resort remained within the limits of its natural facilities. Only a few small huts or cabins could be seen here and there. In 1951, Poiana Brasov hosted the World University Winter Games. On this occasion, a modern sports hotel and the first cable car – Poiana-Postăvarul – on a length of 2,150m were put into use. Other improvements and facilities followed, bringing Poiana to the appearance we know today.

Poiana Brasov has 12 ski slopes with different degrees of difficulty (Bradul – 458 m, Kanzel – 350 m, Sulinar – 2441 m, Ruia – 540 m, Subteleferic 1 – 495 m, Subteleferic 2- 2220 m, Lupului – 2860 m, Drumul Roșu – 3821 m, Stadion – 300 m), sports fields, a lake, discos, bars and restaurants. Accommodation is provided in luxury hotels, guesthouses, villas or cottages. There is also an ambulance and a police station in Poiana, as well as a post office.

The resort is also recommended for the treatment of asthenic neurosis, physical and intellectual exhaustion and overwork, secondary anaemia and endocrine diseases, diseases of the respiratory system. In winter, temperatures often reach -15C.
