The Council Tower of Sibiu

Dating from the early 13th century, the Council Tower at number 1 connects the Small Square to the Big Square. It originally served as the gateway to the second belt of fortifications. It got its name because the building next to it was the town hall of Sibiu. The tower partially collapsed in the 1586 earthquake, but was rebuilt two years later; the roof and upper floor date from 1829.

Over the years it served as a prison, shops, firehouse and museum. There’s not much to see inside, except for the clock mechanism on the sixth level. The seventh level, reached by climbing 141 steps, has an observation platform.
