The Orthodox Cathedral in Brasov is one of the biggest cathedrals in the region

Tucked away at the end of a baroque passageway, amidst the merchants’ houses on the northern side of the square, the Orthodox Cathedral offers a touch of exoticism, in contrast to the German air of the square. If other Orthodox cathedrals in Transylvania seem designed to dominate their surroundings, this one almost apologises.

The Orthodox Cathedral of Brasov was built between 1895 and 1896, being a true Romanian architectural work.
Initially, the Cathedral was built out of a desire to reclaim the right to a building after the church in Barițiu Street had been demolished. The effort of the protopope Bartholomeu Baiulescu helped in the construction of the Orthodox Cathedral.

Since the financial resources were not very large, the Orthodox built a chapel in these places in 1876. With the funds collected from the faithful, the construction of the cathedral was started at the end of 1894. The money was raised from a fairly large number of families living in the town centre, 114 in all.

Following the earthquake of 1940, the Orthodox Cathedral Tower collapsed and was rebuilt in 1972.
