The Clock Tower in Sighisoara

The Clock Tower offers an imposing welcome at the entrance to the square. Rebuilt after the 1556 fire on the old foundation, it has a series of statues representing the days of the week – Diana (Monday), Mars (Tuesday), Mercury (Wednesday), Jupiter (Thursday), Venus (Friday), Saturn (Saturday), and the Sun (Sunday). As elsewhere in Romania, the four small towers reveal that Sighisoara had the ius gladii, the right to use the death penalty in medieval times.

The small torture chamber at the base of the tower was once a military prison. A collection of torture instruments includes 6 kg stones that had to be carried by thieves, who were tied to the pillar of infamy in the square.
