Everything you need to know about Azuga town

Located in the northern part of Prahova County, at the confluence of the Prahova River with the Azuga stream, Azuga is an urban settlement, with coordinates of 45 degrees 37′ north latitude and 25 degrees 33′ east longitude. The town has 5,213 inhabitants.

It is a typical mountain locality; its administrative territory of 8,304 ha overlaps both the Predeal’s Clăbucetele Mountains (N-W) and the Gârbovei Mountains (S-E), the town itself, running along the Azuga valley, in an E-W direction, for about 3 km up to the confluence with Prahova.

Location and accessibility are advantages for the town of Azuga, as it is located on the most traveled transcarpathian valley of Romania – Prahova Valley – namely DN 1 E60 and the double electrified railway line Bucharest – Brasov, about 135 km from Bucharest and 36 km from Brasov. It borders to the north with county. Brașov, to the south – west with the town of Bușteni, and to the south – east is the commune of Valea Doftanei.

The major tourist resources are mainly the following:

  • the mountain landscape with great aesthetic and functional value favourable to rest and especially to recreational activities both in winter and summer;
  • a sub-alpine mountain climate, similar to that of the tourist resorts in the province of Prato;
  • remarkable skiing potential in the Gârbovei Mountains and in the Predeal Climbs;
  • valuable fish and game resources.

The Prahova Valley has always been a permanent link between the inhabitants of ancient Dacia and later between the Romans on both sides of the Carpathians. It has been inhabited since the earliest times by people who found here favourable places to live for themselves and their animals.

It originally functioned as an inn, described by Nestor Urechea in his work Drumul Brașovului and by Nicolae Iorga in Scrisori de negustori . An old document from 1815 mentions the inn Căciula Mare. This settlement gradually expanded thanks to an intense pastoral life.

The Intre Prahove Inn, according to oral tradition, was built in the middle of the 18th century, in Azuga, at the foot of the Taurului Cliff, next to today’s General School, near the place where the Azuga stream flows into the Prahova river. The place where it was located gave it its name, because, in the past, both rivers were considered the source of the Prahova.

Around the inn, to the north and to the south, to the east and to the west, there were no human dwellings in the early days. It was only in the early years of the 18th century that a few small farms appeared here and there, such as that of the shepherd George Zangor.

It seems that the craftsmen who built the inn had a model in the Slonul de Piedra. They worked hard, making here an inn just as large, at least in terms of the number of rooms. The granary, hayloft and other outbuildings were arranged around the main building, replacing the stone wall, so that, in its external appearance, the Intre Prahove Inn was different from the other inns in the Upper Prahova Valley.
